The Cabinet approved today the appointment of Maj. Gen, David Elazar, 47, to become Chief of Staff of Israel’s Armed Forces. Gen Elazar will succeed Lt. Gen. Haim Bar-Lev who is retiring from the Army and is expected to be named Minister of Commerce and Industry next year. The official change of command will take place Jan. 1, 1972. Gen. Elazar, who commanded Israel’s armored corps in the Six-Day War, is presently chief of the General Staff Department at General Headquarters. His elevation carries with it promotion to the rank of Lt. Gen.
