Large numbers of the Jewish masses in Eastern Europe look to emigration as an absolute necessity to escape starvation, declared Dr. Meisel, member of the Latvia parliament, representing the Jewish Labor Party, Bund, at yesterday’s session of the Interparliamentary Union, attended by parliament members from various countries.
The session was devoted to a consideration of the problem of immigration and emigration. Declaring that he speaks in the name of the Jewish working class, Dr. Meisel stated that the Jewish masses in Eastern Europe are now going through a most difficult economic process which has all the characteristics of a thorough-going social transformation. In this situation emigration is a life necessity for a large number of these masses. Generally, the solution of social economic complicated problems is unthinkable without the possibility of emigration. There should, for the benefit of mankind, be established the principle of freedom of immigration for “the entire world is the homstead of entire humanity,” he urged the representatives from many nations.
