Two West German architects were today named the winners of the first prize in a worldwide competition for plans for the reconstruction of the Mashiyeh quarter of Tel Aviv.
B. Alexander Branca and Fred Angeler, both of Munich, were revealed as the winners of the $50,000 first prize when the sealed envelopes identifying the designers of the winning plan were opened today. An international panel of 12 leading architects chose the winning design from among 150 entries from 33 countries. Second prize of $30,000 went to two American architects, Ian Lubiez Nisz and Donald Ray, of San Francisco.
A member of the panel said here today that the fact that West Germans won the first prize shows the unbiased attitude of the judges, who rendered their decisions purely on professional grounds. The winning design will probably be merged into a final plan for Tel Aviv renewal.
