Acting Foreign Minister Luis MacKay and officials of his ministry studied today the new Israeli note on the Eichmann case delivered yesterday by the Israel Ambassador, Aryeh Levavi. The terms of the note were transmitted to President Arturo Frondizi who is now traveling in Europe.
The 1, 500-word document, by and large a re-statement of the Israel position, made it clear that Israel considered the adoption by the United Nations Security Council of the Argentine resolution on the case, and the apology publicly uttered by Mrs. Golda Meir, the Israel Foreign Minister, the “adequate reparations” called for by the resolution.
The document cited the statements in the Security Council by the United States, Britain and France as clearly implying that the demand for reparations was satisfied by the resolution and apology and their votes for the resolution were based on that assumption.
The note repeated statements made by Premier David Ben-Gurion in his letter to President Frondizi stressing that “moral considerations could not be overlooked in any discussion of the Eichmann case. The note also stressed Israel’s disclaimer of having violated Argentine territory and its statement that the capture of Eichmann on Argentine territory had been effected by individuals.
The note concluded with the expression of hope that the Argentine Government, “in the spirit of mutual respect and harmony that has always happily characterized the relations between both countries, ” would accept the Israel position so that the good relations between the two countries may continue.
