High Holiday services will be held in 500 syna(##)gues and improvised centers of worship in Germany, the largest number to be open (##) one time since the pre-Nazi era. A zone-wide memorial service will be held near (##)dsberg, Bavaria, at the mass grave of an estimated 40,000 Jews murdered by the (##)mans during the liquidation of concentration camps in the Dachau area.
To assist the 175,000 Jews in Germany to observe Rosh Hashanah, the third since (##)ir liberation, the Joint Distribution Committee has distributed 150,000 religious items and 1,000,000 pounds of food, it was announced here. The food was in addition to the JDC monthly supplementary food allotment of 800,000 pounds to the DP Jews throughout Germany.
Included in the High Holiday supplies were 20,000 prayer books. 100,000 candles, 15,000 prayer shawls, 1,500 skull caps made from parachute silk contributed by the U.S. Army Air Force and 2,000 lulav and esrogim imported from Palestine and flown from Marseilles in an Army plane.
The JDC has also distributed thousands of items of wearing apparel, including urgently needed shoes and childrens’ garments. Nearly 1,500 Jews in the Soviet zone received food packages, clothing and religious supplies from the JDC Berlin office. Permission for distribution of the supplies was given by the Soviet occupation authorities.
