The opening of Portuguese colonies to Jewish immigration is a desirable possibility in the opinion of the Portuguese government, according to General D’Andrade, former Portuguese Minister for Foreign Affairs and a member of the Permanent Mandates Commission of the League of Nations.
When interviewed by the representative of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, General D’Andrade stated that in view of the difficult economic position in which the Jewish masses find themselves in the East European countries, there would be an opening for emigration to the Portuguese colonies.
The Jews have never been driven out of Portugual on the initiative of the Portuguese people, General D’Andrade said. The expulsion was due only to the political factors which obtained in the Iberian Peninsula at that time.
