Announcement has been made that the Joint Distribution Committee has decided to continue for four months the grant in aid to the Hebrew schools conducted by the Tarbuth Organization. A grant of $8,000 has been made towards the budget for four months, from May to August, inclusive. Further assistance is “out of question” it is stated.
Announcement of the withdrawal by the JD### of its subvention to the Tarbuth schools caused a widespread protest movement. A press conference was held some time ago at the Warsaw headquarters of the Organization at which continuance of the subvention was urged.
Senator Dr. Thon then declared that 30,000 children were receiving instruction in the 234 Tarbuth schools. The Jewish Deputies, he said, are demanding that the Government grant a subvention to the Tarbuth schools in accordance with the terms of the Constitution and the Treaty of Versailles. As long as government aid is not guaranteed, the schools are dependent on the Joint Distribution Committee, which pledged itself to support them for one year with a monthly grant of $6,750. The effect of the withdrawal of this subsidy would make it impossible to maintain the schools Dr. Thon contended.
