The Mapai-dominated coalition Government faced new troubles today in the objections of the left-wing Mapam to Treasury-sponsored cuts in the Government budget. Mapam leaders reportedly were convinced that the cuts were aimed specifically at the Ministry of Development which is headed by a Mapam member, Mordecai Bentov.
The issues were discussed at a meeting of the Mapam secretariat officially convened to discuss the budget cut proposals offered by Levi Eshkol, Israel’s Finance Minister. The secretariat said that the cuts would hinder future development projects and that the Mapai party intended to limit the functions of the Development Ministry.
The Mapam political committee was convened for a meeting on the questions while the evening press reported that Mr. Bentov had threatened to resign if the Development budget was not increased.
