U.S. Senator Wayne Morse of Oregon today told the United Jewish Appeal’s Eastern Pennsylvania Regional Conference here that “to aid the United Jewish Appeal means to aid Israel and to aid Israel means to bolster the free way of life.” He was addressing more than 300 leaders of Jewish communities throughout Eastern Pennsylvania at the Americus Hotel.
Other speakers at the all-day meeting included Dr. Nahum Goldmann, chairman of the Jewish Agency, who has just returned from Israel; Moritz M. Gottlieb, national chairman for Regions of the United Jewish Appeal and Mrs. S. Alexander Brailove, chairman of the U.J.A. National Women’s division. Dr. Goldmann told the conference that Israel faces a new year and a new challenge. “The outcome of the race between the rains of winter and the flow of immigration is not one that can be postponed. Nor can we postpone without fateful results the ingathering of Jews from countries whose gates, open today, may close tomorrow,” he pointed out.
Mr. Gottlieb announced that delegates to the conference from communities throughout Eastern Pennsylvania brought a total of nearly $700,000 for the United Jewish Appeal to the meeting to be used for immediate needs in Israel.
