Funds raised at a masquerade ball are not good enough to be used in the construction of a synagogue in the view of the Orthodox leaders of the Jewish community of Brzuchowice, Galicia.
The synagogue of the town was destroyed by fire recently. The elders then started a collection to rebuild the synagogue. As the funds came in rather slowly a group of local women undertook to raise the funds by arranging a dance and cabaret. This undertaking brougnt a sum larger than that required. The synagogue committee however, refused to accept the money declaring it was tainted because of the method employed in raising it.
