The renewed anti-Jewish drive, hitherto quietly conducted by the secret police, today assumed an open character when scores of meetings were held throughout the country, at which Nazi leaders called upon the population to renew the boycott against the Jews and to drive them out of economic existence.
In a number of cities in Franconia posters were displayed threatening Jews with pogroms “if anything happens to our Fuehrer Hitler.” Julius Streicher, the notorious Jew-baiter and ruler of Franconia, stated openly at a meeting that the Nazi government is behind the present renewed crusade against the Jews.
SAYS REGIME BACKS HIM
“We are determined to fight the Jews to the very bitter end,” Herr Streicher said. “The Jewish question must be settled once and forever. The propaganda which I am conducting against the Jews in the Stuermer is fully backed by the government. This explains why the authorities do not heed the requests for suppressing the Stuermer.”
While Streicher was addressing a demonstration in Nuremberg, another prominent Nazi leader, Herr Sprengel, spoke at a meeting of peasants in the Starkenburg district, urging them to avoid dealing with Jews.
DEMANDS PEASANT BOYCOTT
“The Jews,” Herr Sprengel said, “are trying to seize all trade. We cannot check them by legislative measures. We must leave it to you peasants to boycott the Jews. No product should be sold by any peasant to a Jew.”
The press and propaganda department of the German Labor Front today issued a proclamation accusing the Jews of open sabotage and threatening them with “measures.” The proclamation charges that “several Jewish store-
