The South African Government is considering introduction in the new Parliament of legislation aimed at checking the use of political uniforms it was reported here today in authoritative circles.
Prohibition of para-military organizations and the wearing of uniforms by political groups has long been advocated by influential groups within the United (Government) Party. Disorders by uniformed members of political groups during the recent election campaign, during which many meetings were interrupted, are now said to have swung several members of the Cabinet to the view that some such steps are now necessary.
It is believed that the legislation, when introduced, will be modelled after the British Public Order Act, which forbids the wearing of uniforms by political organizations. Such a bill would, it is believed, be a severe blow to the Greyshirts and rival Fascist organizations here.
