Syrian President Hafez Assad skipped last week’s funeral of Morocco’s King Hassan II to avoid “handshakes by coincidence” with Israeli leaders, according to the Syrian state-run Al-Thawra newspaper. By not going to Morocco, Assad thwarted artificial encounters that are far from the “practical basis for peace,” the paper added Saturday.
