The United States is prepared to do everything it can to help Israel and the Palestinian Authority move the peace process forward, President Clinton said after a meeting Thursday with Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat at the White House. Earlier in the day in New York, Arafat called for the immediate end of Israeli settlement policy during an address to the U.N. General Assembly. In his speech he also said he looks forward to the participation of an independent Palestine, with Jerusalem as its capital, “as a member state in the United Nations” next year.
