Jew and Protestant gathered with Roman Catholics in St. Peter’s Church here yesterday to pay honor to the memory of Edward Godchaux, beloved Jew and sugar planter of this little city. In keeping with the life of the deceased philanthropist, who for 30 years provided employment to the people of the countryside on his huge plantations and refineries, creedal lines were withdrawn and men and children of all races and religions crowded the church while three elaborate stained windows were unveiled and dedicated in his name.
Men and women sobbed audibly as Father John Eyraude recalled the events of Edward Godchaux’s career and retold the story of how the late philanthropist had come forward as the benefactor of the countryside.
