Preparations were underway here today for various events to mark the 1,000th anniversary of the Jewish community of Czechoslovakia. They will include two art exhibits, one devoted to Czech Jewish painters and the other to Jewish artists from all over the world. There will also be an exhibit of documents and relics. Local Jewish leaders, however, attached greatest importance to the history of Czechoslovakian Jewry now being prepared for publication. A date for the official celebration has yet to be set but it is believed it will be held toward the end of the year. Originally, the Jewish millenium celebrations were to have been held last spring. But the prior Czech regime suspended plans following the June, 1967 Six-Day War and the severance of diplomatic relations with Israel.
The 20th anniversary of the death of Egon Erwin Kisch, a prominent Czech Jewish writer, was observed here on television and radio programs and in the local press. A special memorial meeting was held by the council of Jewish communities of Bohemia and Moravia of which he had been an honorary president. A well-known Czech actor, Vaclav Vasko, read exerpts from Mr. Kisch’s works which were praised at the meeting by Rudolph Iltis, a scholar and critic.
