The American Government was urged to seek the cooperation of the Soviet Union to promote Middle East disarmament and an Arab-Israel peace in a policy statement adopted here today at a regional conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee at the Hotel Roosevelt. The Committee called for a “stronger and more dynamic U.S. policy in order to reverse the present drift towards war and to achieve direct Arab-Israel negotiations for a peace settlement.”
The Committee’s statement welcomed recent reaffirmation of U.S. commitments to strengthen Israel defenses, to preserve Israel’s sovereignty and to oppose aggression in the Near East. At the same time, the Committee warned against continuing Arab preparations for war against Israel, the intensification of guerrilla terrorism and the costly and dangerous escalation of the arms race.
