The United Nations Emergency Force has no intention of internationalizing the Gaza Strip, UN undersecretary Ralph J. Bunche declared today Dr. Bunche’s statement was made at Gaza, which he visited this morning, and relayed to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency by a United Nations aide at a checkpost north of Gaza.
“For the time being, ” said Dr. Bunche, “UNEF has the sole responsibility for the Gaza Strip, but there is no intention to internationalize the Strip. As in Sinai, UNEF is in the Strip after a clear agreement with the Egyptian Government. UNEF’s task has been defined by General Assembly resolution, and the Force will not go beyond that definition.”
Dr. Bunche’s UN aide declared that Gaza was “quiet” today, and said that yesterday’s demonstrations had been “engineered by extremists.”
