In an effort to wipe out current indebtedness in order to enter the Community Chest without debts, the Jewish Community Center is striving to raise approximately $15,000 in a “deficiency” drive.
Major Julius I. Peyser who is directing the campaign announced that a check for $50, the first contribution in the drive, had been received from Joseph P. Tumulty, former secretary to President Wilson.
The Jewish Center is making preparations to play host to the national convention of the Jewish Welfare Board, which will be held here Sunday, December 16. The convention will bring to Washington directors of Jewish Centers and Y. M. H. A.’s throughout the country, as well as many social welfare workers.
Maurice D. Rosenberg, former president of the District Bankers’ Association, is chairman of the committee on arrangements. Others on the committee are Simon Lyon, E. I. Kauffmann, Morris Cafritz, Judge Milton Strasburger and Maurice Bisgyer. Among those expected to attend are Judge Irving Lehman, Felix M. Warburg, Louis Marshall, Dr. Cyrus Adler.
