Libyan Jews will be permitted to emigrate to Israel but they will be barred from returning here, the government announced today. The new ruling, which also bars visits to Israel, will particularly affect Libyan Jews who have been accustomed to paying periodic visits to Israel on personal or business matters.
Anti-Semitic newspapers here have been campaigning to persuade the government to ban the re-entry of Libyan Jews into the country. The government’s decision has caused considerable concern among Jews here, many of whom have relatives in Israel.
