The major world powers are planning new sanctions against Iran while negotiating an end to the nuclear impasse.
“In view of the fact that Iran has not fulfilled the requirements of U.N. Security Council Resolutions 1737 and 1747, including the suspension of its enrichment and reprocessing activities, we agree to finalize a text for a third U.N. Security Council Sanctions Resolution,” said a statement issued Sept. 28 by the five permanent members of the Security Council – Russia, the United States, France, Britain and China – as well as the European Union and Germany. It said the new resolution would proceed to a vote unless there was confirmation by November that Iran was cooperating.
The United Nations has imposed two sets of limited financial sanctions on Iran since last December.
The statement came after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad indicated in remarks to the U.N. General Assembly that his country considered the matter of nuclear inspections closed.
“We seek a negotiated solution that would address the international community’s concerns over Iran’s nuclear program,” the statement said. “We reiterate our commitment to see the proliferation implication of Iran’s nuclear program resolved.”
The grouping asked the top E.U. diplomat, Javier Solana, to set up new meetings with the top Iranian nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani.
