The National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) today applauded the Senate for its confirmation of Tom Perez as assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. NCJW President Nancy Ratzan issued the following statement:

“NCJW is pleased that a strong bipartisan majority in the US Senate confirmed Tom Perez to lead the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. The mission of the division is to provide equal treatment and equal justice under the law by enforcing civil rights laws pertaining to education, employment, housing, voting, criminal justice, and public accommodations. Tom Perez has demonstrated a commitment to supporting and strengthening that mission. He brings a wealth of experience to the post, as a former Senate staff member, law professor, elected and appointed public official, and as a career attorney in the civil rights division. Mr. Perez is the right person to take on the challenge of restoring the reputation and effectiveness of the civil rights division after years of controversy and inaction.

“NCJW congratulates Mr. Perez and urges the Senate to act quickly to confirm other qualified nominees to executive and judicial branch positions.”
