(JTA) — Synagogues continue to be targeted across Europe in response to the Gaza conflict.
An attack Monday night on the synagogue in Pisa is being linked to passions over Israel’s military operation in the strip. Unknown individuals threw eggs filled with red paint against the facade.
Political leaders sharply condemned the act and voiced solidarity with the city’s 250-member Jewish community. Pisa Mayor Marco Filippeschi said the city would pay for repair and repainting.
"The city is united alongside the Jewish community which has suffered this offense, regardless of opinions on the drama under way in Gaza," he said.
On Wednesday, a man who identified himself as a Palestinian attacked a guard outside a Berlin synagogue.
Police said the man, 35, beat the guard with an iron bar, injuring the guard’s arm. The man said later that he was protesting Israel’s military operation in Gaza. Other guards managed to subdue the attacker.
Also Wednesday, "Long Live Palestine" was among the graffiti painted on a synagogue in the French city of Mulhouse. On Tuesday night, a swastika was painted on a synagogue in the French city of Lille and rocks were thrown at the building.
