Hate crimes in the United States increased by 3.5 percent in 2000, according to the FBI’s annual hate crimes statistics report. Some 13.7 percent of all 8,152 hate crimes reported were directed at Jews and Jewish institutions, and these made up 80 percent of all religion-based crimes last year in the United States, according to the report, issued Wednesday.
