Support is growing to include a reference to Europe’s Christian roots in the E.U. constitution. According to a questionnaire circulated among E.U. member and candidate states, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Malta now have joined Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain in calling for a reference to Europe’s historical and cultural Christian roots in the constitution’s preamble. France and Belgium have been particularly vociferous in opposing the reference.
