The mayor of the city in Romania led the procession by villagers dressed in traditional clothing to emphasize that the Jewish novelist is no less a part of their heritage than its other elements.
The 1886 synagogue was destroyed by Allied bombs, rebuilt and reinaugurated in 1947, when it was dedicated to the over 16,000 Jews exterminated in Auschwitz.
