Berlin memorial honors murdered Jews

To the Editor:

I would like to correct two errors in the article concerning Peter Eisenman being awarded a 2010 Wolf Prize.

As Peter told me many times during interviews in Berlin, his memorial is NOT a Holocaust memorial but a Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. It is also designed to reflect some of his personal experiences in Iowa, as well as show the manifold stages of being Jewish in Berlin, past and present.

Furthermore, the memorial was constructed on the garden plots of the German ministries of agriculture and foreign affairs, and the palace of the Reich’s president. Hitler’s Reich’s Chancellery was located two blocks south of the present memorial site.
