NEW YORK (JTA) — Ron Prosor has assumed his duties as Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations.
Prosor, who was Jerusalem’s envoy in London, began his U.N. posting on Wednesday.
“It is an honor and a privilege to represent Israel — a vibrant, democratic state — in the halls of the United Nations,” Prosor said in a statement. ”I stand ready to work with the international community to address our shared challenges and seize our common opportunities in this important multi-lateral organization.”
Prosor, a former director-general of Israel’s Foreign Ministry, was appointed to the U.N. post in March.
He succeeds veteran diplomat Meron Reuben, who had been serving in a temporary capacity since Gabriela Shalev stepped down from the ambassador’s post last year. The appointment of a permanent replacement for Shalev had been delayed because of disagreements between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman.
