Re the Reform movement’s self-assessment: Reform and Conservative Judaism ultimately should band together. They should deal with the fact that an increasing number of Jews no longer believe in the words of the liturgy, which posit a supernatural God. The new emphasis should be both on revising the prayerbooks and promoting the concept of Jewish peoplehood.
Moreover, Jewish education, despite the lack of sufficient time, should begin to stress the arts — joint synagogue choirs, plays and debates. Students will gain much more by participating in these Jewishly significant activities than in much of the current learning. Hebrew language immersion should begin in nursery school and continue throughout the Hebrew school experience.
